Quantization moves recorded notes onto a rhythmic grid so their timing lines up with the beat. In a DAW you pick the grid value, then decide how far notes travel toward it. Strength, swing and range settings control how much of the original performance survives the correction, which is what separates tight from lifeless.
Quantization in music is the timing correction every producer meets in their first week on a DAW. You record a keys part, half the notes land late, you hit quantize, and the whole thing locks to the grid and arrives dead. The command worked. The part got worse.
That gap between correct timing and good timing is what this guide covers. What Quantizing Actually Moves
Basic grid quantization changes timing. It does not change pitch, and it does not change the instrument. It moves the note's start position, and optionally its end position, to the nearest line on a grid you choose. Advanced or groove quantization can also change length and velocity.
That grid comes from the project tempo. At 120 BPM a 16th-note grid drops a line every 125 milliseconds, so a note played 40 ms late gets dragged 40 ms earlier at 100% strength. Change the tempo and the spacing changes with it, which is why tempo is the decision that has to land first.
Ableton Live, Logic Pro, FL Studio, Pro Tools, Cubase and REAPER all let you treat note starts and note ends as separate targets. Pro Tools names them Note On and Note Off and adds a Preserve Note Duration option. Enabling it moves the end with the start to preserve duration, and disabling it leaves the end fixed. Quantizing note ends on a held pad or a sustained bass note will chop or stretch the note, which is almost never the intent.
Audio quantizes too, by a different route. Pro Tools applies Elastic Audio processing to detected transient events, and Cubase's AudioWarp mode time-stretches the audio so its warp markers land on the grid. The timing moves, but the sample gets processed to get there. That is a real difference from MIDI, where basic timing-only quantization rewrites nothing but a position value.
The Five Settings That Decide How It Sounds
Quantize is not one control. It is a small stack of them, and the defaults are the most destructive combination available.
Grid value. The subdivision notes snap to. A 16th grid corrects more than an 8th grid, and destroys more at the same time.
Strength. How far a note travels toward its grid line. Logic Pro's Q-Strength is blunt about it: 100% is full quantization, 0% leaves the note exactly where it was played. Avid's own Pro Tools guide recommends 70 to 80% when the goal is tighter timing that keeps the original feel.
Swing. Offsets every second grid position so off-beats land late. Pro Tools measures swing from 0 to 300%, where 100% gives a triplet feel, and Avid suggests 12% for a light swing and 50 to 75% for something closer to true triplets. Logic's Q-Swing works around a 50% center, and Apple calls 50 to 75% the practical range. REAPER's guide makes the smaller point: 5% or less is often enough to stop a part sounding rigid.
Range. A window that decides which notes are even eligible. Pro Tools splits it into Include Within, which quantizes only notes already close to the grid, and Exclude Within, which leaves the close ones alone and fixes the disasters. Cubase calls its version Catch Range. Logic's Q-Range covers both directions using positive and negative values.
Randomize. Scatters notes slightly after the quantize has run, so the result is not machine-perfect. Cubase sets it in ticks, Pro Tools as a percentage.
The pairing worth stealing is Avid's: Strength at 70 to 80% with Exclude Within at 10 to 15%. Notes that were nearly right keep their timing, notes that were badly out get pulled most of the way in, and corrected outliers stop short of perfect alignment.

Groove Templates: Quantizing to a Feel Instead of a Grid
Grid quantizing asks where a note should be. Groove quantizing asks what a reference performance did, then applies that timing map instead. It is the single biggest upgrade available to anyone whose programmed parts keep sounding stiff.
Ableton Live keeps these in the Groove Pool. Base sets the resolution the groove gets measured against, Timing controls how strongly the pattern is imposed, and a Global Amount control scales Timing, Random and Velocity across every loaded groove, up to 130% for exaggerated versions. Any audio or MIDI clip can be dragged in to become a new groove.
Pro Tools calls them Groove Templates. Beat Detective analyzes an audio selection for transient peaks and maps the rhythmic relationships to a 960 parts-per-quarter-note template, which can then drive MIDI timing, duration and velocity. Cubase builds the equivalent from hitpoints with Create Groove Quantize Preset. FL Studio's Quantizer loads FL score files as presets and blends original note properties against the preset with its Levels knobs.
Logic Pro takes a fourth route. Q-Velocity and Q-Length pull velocity and note length from a template region, ignoring it at 0% and adopting its exact values at 100%. Negative values push the part further away from the template, which is a deliberately underused way of making two layered parts stop agreeing with each other.
The When-Not-To-Quantize Framework
Most bad quantizing is not a wrong setting. It is quantizing something that did not need it. Five steps, in order.
1. Lock the tempo before you touch the grid. The grid is derived from project tempo. Quantizing against a tempo you are still second-guessing means correcting notes toward lines that will not survive the next decision.
2. Quantize the anchor, not the whole part. Kick and hi-hats hold the pulse and usually want tighter timing. Snares, claps and keys carry the feel and usually want less. Quantizing all of them to the same strength flattens the relationship between them, which is the relationship listeners hear as groove.
3. Reach for a window before a hammer. Exclude Within, Catch Range and Q-Range exist so you can fix the four notes that are genuinely wrong without touching the forty that are fine. Full-strength grid quantize on everything is the blunt version of a job that has a precise version.
4. Leave note ends alone on anything sustained. Pads, held bass, string beds and organ parts get their character from note length. Quantize the starts, preserve the durations, and the part stays musical.
5. Audition against the original before committing. Cubase has Reset Quantize, Pro Tools has Restore Performance, and REAPER has Unquantize. The comparison takes ten seconds and catches the version where the un-quantized take was already better.
Some parts fail this test every time. Live drums where the drummer sits behind the beat on purpose, lo-fi and neo-soul keys, guitar and bass strums where the spread across strings is the sound, and any performance that already sits in the pocket. For artists recording at home, the fastest quality win is usually resisting the grid on one or two parts per song, not applying it harder to all of them.
